Genetic and Environmental Influences

چکیده
review the literature on handedness, dichotic listening and anatomical asymmetry in schizophrenia and concluded that there was strong evidence for decreased cerebral lateralisation. As they point out, the implication is that finding the locus of the gene for cerebral dominance could unravel the genetic predisposition to schizophrenia. Procopio (2001) raises a number of points relevant to the findings of Sommer et al and concludes that both genetic and environmental factors have to be accounted for – ‘the right shift is still only a hypothesis’. Procopio’s comments focus on handedness and it is important to remind ourselves, as Sommer et al’s review makes clear, that handedness is no more than an indirect and developmentally labile index of anatomical asymmetry and language lateralisation; it is this last variable and its genetic determination (Crow, 1998a,b) that is of greatest relevance.

A study on genetic aspects of seed dormancy
Changes in seed dormancy were selected during the domestication of crop plants from wild-plant species, because some features of dormancy that provide ecological advantages presented agronomic disadvantages within a farmed system. Seed dormancy varies widely among seed batches, even for seeds of the same genotype, indicating large environmental influences. For genetic studies, it is essential t...

متن کاملGenetic and environmental influences on antisocial behavior: a meta-analysis of twin and adoption studies.
A meta-analysis of 51 twin and adoption studies was conducted to estimate the magnitude of genetic and environmental influences on antisocial behavior. The best fitting model included moderate proportions of variance due to additive genetic influences (.32), nonadditive genetic influences (.09), shared environmental influences (.16), and nonshared environmental influences (.43). The magnitude o...
متن کاملGenetic factors contribute to the association between peers and young adults smoking: univariate and multivariate behavioral genetic analyses.
This present study investigated the genetic and environmental influences on the associations between adolescents' peer characteristics (i.e., peer college orientation, and peer delinquency) and smoking in young adulthood. We used longitudinal data from the Nonshared Environment and Adolescent Development (NEAD) project. Parents' reports on adolescents' peer characteristics and adolescents' self...
متن کاملGenetic and Environmental Etiology of Infant Hemodynamic Response to Speech Stimuli: A Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study of Twins
For adults and children, genetic and environmental factors are known to affect brain structure and neural activity necessary for conducting various cognitive tasks. However, little is known regarding genetic and environmental contributions to individual differences in neural activity during the first two years of life. Concentrations of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin were measured bilat...
متن کاملGenetic and environmental influences on affiliation with deviant peers during adolescence and early adulthood.
Adolescence and early adulthood is a time when peer groups become increasingly influential in the lives of young people. Youths exposed to deviant peers risk susceptibility to externalizing behaviors and related psychopathology. In addition to environmental correlates of deviant peer affiliation, a growing body of evidence has suggested that affiliation with deviant peers is heritable. This stu...
